Crafts on Peel “Embracing Craft, Connecting Culture” Exhibition
Crafts on Peel is a Hong Kong non-profit charitable foundation dedicated to revitalising, reinterpreting, and sustaining traditional craftsmanship. Through apprenticeship and intergenerational skill exchange, the foundation fosters collaboration between master artisans and emerging creators, nurturing the next generation while integrating traditional techniques into contemporary design.
This exhibition presents a rare collaboration between father and daughter—Lingnan penjing master Wong Chau Shing and contemporary artisan Kammy Wong—participating together as master-and-apprentice. The four exhibited works trace their intergenerational dialogue, shared memories, and creative exchange. The father imparts a lifetime of mastery and wisdom, while the daughter reinterprets the aged branches from his penjing practice through contemporary artistic language—extending the life of the material and reshaping the boundaries between craft and art.
Artwork 1: “Ancient Roots, Modern Bloom” - Named after Lingnan penjing techniques, this work uses aged red-fruit branches and draws inspiration from childhood memories of dressing dolls. The branches are coated with lacquered gold, blue-and-white porcelain motifs, and contemporary hues of pink and turquoise. Embedded magnets allow the sculpture to be reassembled, extended, and interacted with. It is a tactile, playful, and reconfigurable sculpture that embodies the evolving possibilities of traditional craft in the hands of a new generation.
Artwork 2: “Illuminated Heritage” - This work reflects the years the artist’s father spent growing alongside his bonsai. The vase represents a vessel of life, while reshaped branches gain renewed continuity. Under sunlight, the natural textures appear; under UV light, blue-and-white porcelain patterns emerge briefly—symbolising the reappearance, fading, and rebirth of culture through time. It is a dialogue across time, a play of light and memory within craft.
Artwork 3: “Hong Kong, Hong Kong” - Conceived as a “three-dimensional painting,” this work transforms a weathered tree stump reminiscent of an old fishing port. Jade, mother-of-pearl, pearls, and semi-precious stones are individually inlaid into the wood, symbolising Hong Kong’s multicultural vibrancy and its history as a meeting point of global cultures. The once-barren stump becomes a radiant cityscape, reflecting Hong Kong’s resilience and enduring allure.
Artwork 4: “ Serpentine Constellation” - Centred on a Murraya tree cultivated by the artist’s father for eighteen years, this work features gold particles scattered along the branches, with golden buds symbolising renewal. Eighteen strands of pearls echo the eighteen years of cultivation—like grains of sand transformed into pearls, or a serpentine dragon in motion, linking celestial constellations with treasures of the sea. The piece embodies cycles of life, the continuity of craft, and the profound, intangible bond between father and daughter.
